Only those who have never had Hay fever can underestimate its impact on daily functioning during the summer months. Hay fever symptoms affect about 10-15% of the population and can cause significant fatigue and problems with concentration and alertness. Research has shown that people may perform 5-10% worse in exams during Hay fever season than at other times of the year.
Since I was ten years old, despite regular antihistamines, steroid nasal sprays, and eye drops, hay fever symptoms of varying severity have been part of every summer.
What Causes Hay Fever?
Hay fever is caused by the immune system reacting unnecessarily to pollens. The immune system is a vital part of the body, but it can sometimes unnecessarily use up a lot of energy by “fighting off” pollen, which it sees as an attack. This energy could be better used in other areas of life. Pollen production can start as early as late January and continue until September, depending on the specific allergen. This means that the allergy season can last for many months.
Most of the time, it can be controlled by increasing your antihistamines, but from time to time, you need something that can reduce your hypersensitivity to pollen.
This is where steroid medications can be effective. These can be tablets or injections. They are suitable for those with severe Hay fever who have exhausted all options and can bring welcome relief!
